Tagus Bridge Upgrade, Portugal
Sector: Pell Frischmann Brown Beech
Cost: Confidential
Location: Portugal
Project Details
The original suspension bridge, which was completed in 1966, was upgraded to carry a train track through the truss deck and expand the carriageway from five lanes to six lanes. The bridge is a suspension bridge with steel truss deck and steel towers. Cables are constructed from steel wire with concrete gravity anchors.
The bridge upgrade involved the addition of a second suspension cable above the first. This was performed successfully for the first time without disruption to traffic. The work also involved the replacement and modification of many rivetted connections.
