Pell Frischmann Shortlisted for Regional ICE Award

Pell Frischmann is delighted to announce that the Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation Scheme (COPFAS) has been shortlisted for the Smeaton Award by the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Awards 2020.

In a unique position, the city of Hull is settled on flat land adjacent to the sea and close to sea level, with several surrounding valleys that drain their rainwater into the basin in which Hull city centre sits, thus making the region vulnerable to intense flooding.

In 2007, over 14,000 properties were affected by flooding in Kingston-Upon-Hull.  In order to reduce future flooding, the COPFAS storm-water attenuation project was proposed by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to protect the areas of Cottingham and Orchard Park. Built in two phases, the project consisted of the planning, design and on-site engineering consultancy for a system of nine storage lagoons throughout the Raywell Valley and Orchard Park area to retain surface water. Designed and constructed over three years from 2016 to 2019, this scheme is now complete and operational.

At Pell Frischmann, our unique ownership structure means that most of our profits go towards funding the perpetual environmental and social obligations resulting from the cessation of hard coal mining. We are proud to have delivered a scheme that creates value aligned to our noble purpose and sustainable aspirations. Our work will help protect thousands of residents and properties from flooding in Hull and the surrounding areas.

Richard Lewis, Civil Engineering Services Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:

“We are delighted to be shortlisted for this award. We are incredibly proud of the Cottingham and Orchard Park Flood Alleviation scheme, which has already been proved to provide protection for many Hull and East Riding residents.”

We look forward to celebrating COPFAS with our clients and partners at the ICE Regional Awards night on Friday 6 March 2020 at Sheffield City Hall.
